Most drivers have at some stage in their lives come to the sad realisation that their car is no extended worth fixing – it’s too costly to explain the cost or has been hardly injured in an accident – and your trusty friend has to go to the scrapyard in the sky. It’s a painful pill to swallow, and the only way to feel more useful is to get as much as you can from what is now a pile of scrap.
In recent years, scrap metal values have fallen. With up to two million cars being scrapped annually in the AU, it’s not hard to determine why. So, maybe you need to control your expectations for a while.

Wait a minute – can’t I sell bits for spares?
It’s a job for a skilled amateur or a trained mechanic, so best not to attempt dismantling your car or van if your only experience is changing a wheel. However, if you are nifty with a spanner and have the space, time and preference, you may find that selling the parts would raise more cash. But do bear in mind that if you are left with just a carcass, it could be that no one wants that, so you will have to pay to have it removed. In any case, it’s a good idea to do your research thoroughly first before you decide to have bits of a car or van on your driveway.
It’s illegal to buy cars for cash.
If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Beware of enticing signs on lampposts at traffic lights and other references online offering cash for cars. Since the Scrap Metal Dealers’ Act of 2013, scrap cars have to be dealt with by a registered scrap dealer like Car Cashiers Perth. You also have to prove who you say you are with your ID and address. Make sure you are trading with a company that will dispose of your car responsibly. Or the experience could come back to bite you, and that fantastic cash price is now not looking so good.
Go for a reputable, reliable company.
Of course, a company not playing by the rules (or the law) can always beat a respectable one on price. Also, when you get quotes, make sure you are getting like for like quotes. The company should be correctly registered as an Authorised Treatment Facility. They must give you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) and other documentation to show your car has been disposed of. Beware of companies offering ‘Destruction certificates’ or comparable sounding paperwork – smoothly mocked up fraudulent forms that look like the real thing but are useless. Secondly, check whether the company offers a free collection or whether you have to go there.
If the car is a non-runner or running poorly or not lawfully insured, it could be a problem if they won’t collect free of charge. It would help if you also told the DVLA you had taken your vehicle to an ATF (you can do this online). Failure to do so could result in a $1000 fine, according to the gov.au website, so nice to play by the laws. A reputable company should advise you about all this. You also get any unused road tax repaid.

Easy Guide to Make Money Scrapping Your Car
Many individuals want to know more about money paid for scrap cars but aren’t sure what’s involved or how to get a fair price for their old vehicle. Around one million vehicles are scrapped in the AU every year, and it’s often the best option if you’ve written off your car or repairs have become too expensive. Read on if you’re looking for fast and effortless answers to your car scrapping questions.
Is Scrapping Your Car Worth It?
Deciding to scrap your vehicle is a big decision, mainly if you depend on it for transport. However, several causes make car scrapping worth it. One could be that running your car has become too expensive, including high fuel consumption. Perhaps your vehicle is no longer safe to drive, or you’re looking to buy a new car anyway. Scrapping your vehicle is one of the quickest, easiest ways to make money from a vehicle that is better off scrapped than remaining on the road.
How Much Can You Get for Your Scrap Car?
We recently wrote a guide to getting the best price for your scrap car, which looked at avoiding some of the hidden costs you could face when dealing with unreliable car scrap dealers. Our rule of thumb is that it probably is if it sounds too good to be true. Reputable companies won’t charge you for collecting your car, so when you receive your quote, ask if there are any charges you can expect to be deducted from that price. At Perth Car Scrappers, we pay up to $150 for cars and vans.
Who Can Scrap Cars?
Some rules and laws guarantee that only the right people scrap cars. You must use an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), which provides your vehicle will actually be discarded rather than end up back on the road. They’ll also uphold high standards regarding how the car is scrapped, protecting the environment.
How Does Car Scrapping Work – Is It Simple?
Yes! If you use a respected company, they’ll be able to give you a quick quote, pick up your car fast (and for free), transfer you the money and then issue a Certificate of Destruction. You’ll need to inform the DVLA that you’re no longer the owner. Even if you no longer have your logbook, the DVLA website lists out the information they need. You can then write to them with these details instead.
